Great Raid, The
Small town disaffection, foreign policy and a bit of the old ultra-violence make a disturbing cocktail in Thomas Clay's feature debut
It is not uncommon for director's low-budget debuts to be small-town coming-of-age dramas, and The Great Ecstasy Of Robert Carmichael , with its setting amongst the feckless youth of coastal Newhaven, might at first seem to be no exception. Thomas Clay, however, has far bigger fish to fry, and his first film sets its ambitious sights on themes as broad as state hypocrisy, post-millennial geopolitics and postmodern anomie. He also throws in some controversial scenes to shock complacent viewers out of their comfort zones.

Great Raid, The
Carina ChocanoJohn Dahl's World War II saga The Great Raid begins with a lengthy, painstaking preamble to a lengthy, painstaking reenactment of the raid on Cabanatuan. Rings no bells? Not to worry. Based on two books, The Great Raid on Cabanatuan by William B. Breuer and Ghost Soldiers by Hampton Sides, the movie will dutifully spackle over every last gap in your education and even allow for dry time.
Meanwhile, the hand of the guy who directed such dexterous neo-noirs as Red Rock West and The Last Seduction is nowhere in evidence. A plodding, squeaky-straight Time-Life tribute to the greatest generation, the movie plays like a commemorative plaque. When Capt. Prince (James Franco) remarks early on that the 6th Ranger Battalion, which eventually carries out the rescu...
not to be missed!
This is one of those few films that you really must see. Based on true events during the war in 1945, this film is a real eye opener and reminder of some of the terrible things that went on during the war.The film is well directed and has what I would consider to be a strong cast throughout.
The main story is based around the rescue of many ex-soldiers who have almost been forgotten about. At times this is sure to depress some, with some mild disturbing scenes. However,it should not be missed.
