Plot Summary:
|
James Gregory once lived in a allotment and had befriended a citizen tad, Bafana, and had neck had a photograph taken with him. Years later, once in a blue moon married to Gloria and father of three children (Chris, Brett, and Natasha), James has nothing but contempt and mourn, as varied South African Caucasians in the unventilated Apartheid-period ridiculed him, foremost him to hate Africans. He seeks to redeem himself aside secret service on imprisoned African Popular Congress Chairman, Nelson Mandela. In the restrictive high collateral prison his toil is to censor all written and vocabular... y communications between prisoners, their visitors, and correspondence. James is uncomfortable when he witnesses Caucasian police and security officers' brutality against civilians, including infants, and tries to be told why Nelson became a revolutionary. This leads him to examine the 'Freedom Charter', a banned authenticate, reportedly known to goad severity against 'whites'. And when he does read this , he changes his mind with regard to Nelson's freedom contention. Happily he, himself, will be alienated by his very own peers. Isolated, he receives termination threats as surplus the phone and has to face the trauma of the 'accidental' obliteration of Brett. In adding, he and his family are kept under termination watch by the security forces amidst trim economic sanctions nearby the international community, and growing worry by the natives who keep on their fight for analogy, and freedom for Nelson Mandela.

Nelson Mandela's remarkable journey from freedom fighter and ANC saboteur to long-term political prisoner to president of a democratic South Africa could be the subject of a dozen movies. Surprisingly, perhaps, this earnest drama from Denmark's Bille August is the first big-screen attempt to retell that incredible story, albeit through the blinkered eyes of a white prison guard who strikes up a friendship with the great man during his 18-year incarceration on Robben Island.

An enjoyable insight. . .
I found this film to be a very enjoyable piece, showing something of the history of South Africa. Even if Mandela wasn't a character in the film it would be interesting as a study of the changes in South Africa, both political and social, which took place between the sixties and 1990 when Mandela was released. The whole piece feels very South African to me (I am South African by the way!) Unlike the previous reviewer I found all the accents believable as they were similair to people which I know! Also, uses of words like mall. . . well my friends and I all use the word mall quite frequently so I don't see any problem with that myself.
