This late-in-the-day romance may be modest in tone, but it showcases expert performances by three actors at the top of their game. Adapted from a story by 'The Darling Buds Of May' author HE Bates, director Irvin lets events unfold at their own pace, and there's something pleasantly Merchant Ivory-ish about the sumptuous look of the film, and its understated approach to the issue of emotional awakening in an exotic clime.
