the mother of all spoofs
I have to confess I absolutely loved this film and I don't think it got the recognition it deserved. The 'confess' is because I'm not a Tim Allen fan, nor am I a Trekkie or sci-fi fan, not crazy about Sigourney being blonde and clevage-exposed either, but my goodness, this movie is a real treat. It has some really subtle moments that had us all in hysterics (and my other half is not that easy to make laugh out loud!). The plot is so clever and original and manages to make a true story out of everything surreal, whilst providing humour, compassion, excitement and pure entertainment as well as some sterling performances from every one of the main crew. See it and enjoy - the kids will love it too!
Galaxy Quest
Goodnatured 'Star Trek' satire about the cast of a defunct science-fiction TV show who are mistaken for real intergalactic heroes by an alien race
After the post-modern horror movie comes the post-modern science-fiction spoof: the washed-up stars of an obvious 'Star Trek' clone abandon their life of wall-to-wall conventions when they are mistaken for real space rangers by a bunch of imperilled aliens. The story is reminiscent of Three Amigos but is far more original and clever, with a hilarious script, terrifically tongue-in-cheek turns from the likes of Weaver and Allen (aka the voice of Buzz Lightyear, just to add to the irony) and the kind of genuinely inspired touches (Rickman's deadpan patter, Rockwell's death wish) that benefit this kind of comedy so much.
