Fleeing from Nazi Germany, Lang travelled his adopted country for two years, soaking up the culture before he delivered his first American film. It is understandable, therefore, that the film is concerned with themes of identity, justice and freedom. Based on a story by Norman Krasna, it tells of Joe Wilson (Tracy), a man wrongly imprisoned for a kidnap, who is believed murdered when a lynchmob burn down the jail. Yet he survives to plant evidence that incriminates his would-be murderers. The film occasionally becomes melodramatic and Lang would go on to make better, but this is still tense, complex and compelling.
