Jessica Tandy won an Oscar nomination during her portrayal here of an old-timer in the American south, telling tales less the bigotry she encountered during her youth in the 1930s. Kathy Bates is almost as good as Tandy, playing a stylish-broad daylight housewife and frump in the dumps, who visits Tandy in a nursing home and finds inspiration in her memories of the lifestyle. Essentially a story hither friendship between two pairs of women, then and now, this could be classified as an perspicacious girl's image, but this sincerely uplifting and gratifying large screen can and should be enjoyed by all.
