Flags of Our Fathers
The story of the American soldiers who raised the US flag on Iwo Jima and the iconic World War Two photograph that made them national heroes. Directed by Clint Eastwood
One emblematic flag in particular concerns Clint Eastwood's elegiac epic - that raised by American soldiers on Mount Suribachi, highest point on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima, key battleground in the Pacific War. The photograph of six figures hoisting their sovereignty on foreign soil renewed national morale and rapidly became the public symbol of the US war effort. The three surviving soldiers, Navy Corpsman John Bradley (Phillippe), and two Marines, Rene Gagnon (Bradford) and Native American Ira Hayes (Beach), were promptly hauled back to the US as real-life heroes and used to kick-start a highly ...
Flags of Our Fathers
Kenneth TuranFlags of Our Fathers is a story of extremes. It's the story of great heroism on a tiny island, of a photograph taken in 1/400th of a second that wreaked havoc with the lives of everyone in it and influenced the course of a war.
It's also a very American tale, set 60 years ago but startlingly relevant today, which intertwines and often contrasts bravery and chicanery, idealism and disillusion, war and propaganda, truth and national security. This sad true story wrings you out emotionally because it's concerned with both the deaths of young men in battle and what happens when the needs of those who survive clash with what society expects and politics demands.
A narrative like this requires a measured, classical style to be most effective, and i...
What is a hero?
As the American marines land on Iwo Jima and make their way up the beaches on foot, the camera switches to the point of view of the entrenched Japanese soldiers quietly preparing to open fire. It is a gripping scene that makes the film worth watching just for those few minutes alone. The governments exploitation of three surviving soldiers who raised the American flag on Iwo Jima in 1945 - when that iconic photograph was taken - makes an interesting story, but I found the long battle scenes difficult to follow as it was hard to tell the characters apart. Consequently when particular marines were talked about in later scenes it was impossible to put a face to the name. Perhaps that doesnt matter. The difference between a soldiers concept of a hero and that of their fa...
