70's classic.
Plot-wise this is very basic stuff, conerning a drifter making a road trip to visit his ill father - what makes it special is the performances and realistic style. Jack Nicholson gives one of his strognest performances here, giving subtlety alongside the more familiar manic styles. The film is generally downbeat (particularly the ending) given the characters method of running away from problems rather than sorting them out, but there's plenty of laughs along the way, particularly during the road trip segment of the movie. Recommended.
A little jewel
It seems ages since I've seen a film with Jack Nicholson that really appealed to me. It is a surprising and unusual film, well worth seeing especially because Nicholson gives a performance worthy of his talent.
Karen Black is excellent too. She has never received enough critical acclaim. An actress born well before her time, see the film and find out why her under-employed talent deserves a revisit.
