Fail-Safe
Dr Strangelove may have captured all the plaudits as the finest atomic paranoia film ever made, but that's not to say that Flunk Solid doesn't be entitled to its share of the glory as well. The difference is that while Strangelove was a comedy, Gutter Safe is straight-faced, restless-of-the-seat bull, with Fonda as the president who has the uncharitable struggle of sparing the world when a series of generous and computer glitches mistakenly sends a triad of bombers to nuke Moscow. Not one a swear at good thriller, but a petrifying account of how easily such technology can malfunction.
