Plot Summary:
|
Charismatic professor David Kepesh glories in the pursuit of adventuresome female students but never lets any dame get too unventilated. When gorgeous Consuela Castillo enters his classroom, however, his protective false front dissolves. Her raven-haired beauty both captivates and unsettles him. Indeed if Kepesh declares her consistency a improve do one's daily dozen of art, Consuela is more than an object of lecherousness. She has a undiluted sense of herself and an emotional force that challenges his preconceptions. An adaptation of acclaimed author Philip Roth's novel 'The Dying Animal', Elegy follows the life of ageing literary professor David Kepesh (Kingsley). Having abandoned his family years ago, he now lives in a state of "emancipated manhood" - sleeping with his young students, indulging in regular no-strings-attached liaisons with a businesswoman closer to his own age (Clarkson), and discussing sexual exploits with his best friend George O'Hearn (Hopper).

shame about the last 15 minutes...
very close to perfection. i thought i was watching a new favourite of mine, but then the last chapter came and i felt so disappointed... great performances by Kingsley, Hopper and Clarkson, amazing cinematography, great direction, but the last part concerning Consuela and Kepesh was absolutely unecessary. It made the film too long, the ending cliched and obvious. Also, is it just me or was Cruz a little bit old for the part? But don't be put off by this. 80% of the film is simply sublime!
Elegy
Claudia PuigTrue to its title, Elegy is a spare, meditative and melancholy film. It is a deeply affecting and profoundly observed saga about love, art, beauty and, especially, mortality. While everyone in the ensemble cast is noteworthy, Ben Kingsley gives a stellar performance as a solitary college professor obsessed with a beautiful Latina student, played by Penelope Cruz. Kingsley plays his part with affecting depth and nuance. His self-absorbed character is not always likable, but is fascinating and even understandable.
