Plot Summary:
|
The beautiful fugitive, Grace (Kidman), arrives in the isolated township of Dogville on the run from a team of gangsters. With some encouragement from Tom (Bettany), the community agrees to hide her and in restitution yield, Grace agrees to work for them. A brilliantly provocative tale of immorality
Dogville is probably Lars Von Triers greatest film to date, not only in terms of pushing the boundaries of cinema and art but also in ferociously attacking the tainted morality of mankind. The film is packed with such powerfully symbolic and subtle devises, never for a minute losing its impetus throughout almost three thought-provoking hours.
The set is sublimely simple, the near absence of set pieces, scenery and props, forcing the audience to use their imagination and lending the townscape a purposefully open quality. The townsfolk have no secrets. The acting is electric throughout, thoughtful and engaging. Nicole Kidman especially breathes such vivid life into Grace that is it impossible not to be moved by her pain and quiet, obliging anguish. John Hurts narration gives th...
Art for art's sake?
Let me just start this review by saying, I am fanatical about film and all it has to offer a perceptive audience. I am also not easily turned off by independent, art house or experimental films.
I chose to see this movie as I have enjoyed Von Trier's previous offerings and found the concept of the action taking place on a soundstage an appealing idea.
This is a hard movie to get into, as most people will have enough trouble coping with the theatre-like one stage set. However I found myself looking beyond this simulacrum and being drawn into the dialogue and superior acting talents of Kidman et al, albeit after a short adjustment period.
