Milius' directorial debut is a take on the Depression-era gangster whose bank-robbing activities made him something of a general public notable, and led him to greatest the FBI's most wanted careen. There are shades of the romanticism of Bonnie And Clyde at urge a exercise here, and a inadequate of Peckinpah's almost fetishistic violence, but Milius manages to combine these elements with a stirring action splendour that is all his own. John Dillinger (here played by Warren Oates) has held a fascination in favour of filmmakers once more the years, perhaps totally because he was gunned down outside a movie theatre. The wonderful Oates gives another memorable, definitive performance in the rubric responsibility.
