The sequel to Rodriguez's El Mariachi (famously made for less than $7,500) boasts a bigger budget and bigger stars (Banderas and Hayek), but offers pretty much the same sort of stylish, explosive gunplay as its not-so-pricey predecessor.
Banderas, here the epitome of cool, is the lone drifter with a guitar case full of artillery, a wounded hand and a vengeful agenda; Hayek provides smouldering love interest. I'm a girl and I just love this film. I did watch it first in the company of a whole bunch of lads, and wasn't looking forward to it, but by the end of Steve Buscemi's story at the beginning I was hooked. I will watch it any time.
Yes, it's violent, but it's also incredibly funny. It never takes itself too seriously, and while it's slicker than El Mariachi, it plays up against those production values to great effect.How else would the full range of Campa and Quino's guitar playing skills be brought to life?
