Somebody put me back in the fridge...
It is the future, and it sucks. As with many post-apocalyptic films, someone has taken over and forced everyone to live a 'serene' and 'peaceful' life by basically banning fun. Everywhere is clean, crime-free and smiley. However, you are fined for doing anything out of the norm and sex requires no physical contact (!).
Suddenly the utopia is rocked by the unfreezing and subsequent escape of a 'super criminal' (Wesley Snipes) who was cryogenically frozen in the 20th century for terrible crimes. The police, who have not fought crime for years, realise that their only solution is to unfreeze a suitable cop...enter Sly Stallone a.k.a. the Demolition Man.
This film is great. Yes, it is corny and horribly predictable but hey, the one-liners can't be...
Great dumb fun
Ah, Demolition Man - what a great movie. Every time I see it I sit there with a big stupid grin on my face for the whole thing.
Sly is perfect, Snipes has immense, infectious fun as the villain, and Sandra Bullock has rarely been so likeable. In between the slam-bang fight scenes, there're a good deal of amusing jokes about political correctness and Sly's own macho image.
The one false note in the whole thing is the underground community of 'Scraps' led by Denis Leary, who does his (by now rather tired) non-PC schtick. It sort of makes sense but looks like a Mad Max fan convention.
Still, six stars - put your brain into neutral and enjoy the ride.
