The anti-Breakfast Club
Society is one of those classic teen movies which where so sucessful in the 1980s -- except this one doesn't have Molly Ringwald ending up with the hottest boy in school. A pre-Baywatch Billy Warlock plays the outsider kid who finds out that his family and the rest of the residents in his small Californian town aren't what they seem. The whole of the movie is a build up to the surreal pay-off in the last 20 minutes, which seems to divide opinion here -- yeah, it's about as subtle a social commentary as Balamory, but it's still a classic climax. I must admit that my inspirational school drama teacher lent me the video of Society when I was 15/16, so maybe I just have a nostalgic softspot for the film. This is Robin Williams' doing what he doesn't do often enough, a powerful straignt acting performance.
You really engage with and feel for the characters.

Peter Weir was on pretty shaky ground when he made Dead Poets Society. Coming on the back of his unsuccessful adaptation of Paul Theroux's The Mosquito Coast, the success or otherwise of Weir's school drama spelt the difference between continued employment in America for the director or a spot on the next boat back to Australia.
That Dead Poets Society was a huge hit with both audiences and critics had only so much to do with Tom Schulman's Oscar-winning screenplay.
