Plot Summary:
|
Based on the 1973 story at hand J. G. Ballard, James and Catherine Ballard are a married a handful of whose sex life has been reduced to recounting tales of mutual disloyalty to turn each other on. One night, James causes a head-on collision with a car carrying Dr. Helen Remington, coup her placate and barely injuring her and himself. Subsequent encounters with each other find that she is oddly sexually aroused by the jeopardy likely to be of car accidents and implicit accidents, and, he soon falls in with a cult of buggy-crash fetishists and invites his little woman to enlist in in with them... . The assemblage is led close to Vaughan, a former scientist twisted by his own disfigurement in an accident and, as a result, a staff obsessed with car crashes as a liberation of sensual animation. Vaughan inducts the Ballards and Dr. Remington into his surreal world of sexual congress in the vanquish seats of cars, re-enactments of noted crate crashes such as James Dean and Jayne Mansfield, viewing photos of fortune victims, screenings of collision videos as a kind of erotica, and fender benders as mating rituals.

Crash
Fame, sex, death and car-crashes are cinema staples, but this disturbing thriller ties them together in a knot of erotic fetishism. David Cronenberg adapts JG Ballard's novel
Even by his high standards, the column inches dedicated to David Cronenberg's adapted tale of JG Ballard's tale of autophilia were notable. Agitation from the usual reactionary suspects came in response to the film's provocative deviance, led by television producer James Ballard (Spader) and his open marriage to Catherine (Unger). Their lives change when James is involved in a car accident, killing the driver of another vehicle. The dead man's wife, Helen Remington (Hunter) survives, like James, with injuries.
Inexplicably, both now find kicks in car crashes and swiftly begin an affair....
Crashed and burned!
I rented this film as I wanted to see what all the fuss was about and after watching it, I don't understand at all.
James Spader plays a marketing executive who, after a horrific car accident, becomes obsessed with the erotic feeling aroused by car accidents. Throughout the film a number of contrived set pieces are played out where various characters use car crashes as sexual stimulants, leading to deadly consequences.
I have long been a fan of David Cronenberg but this film will test the patience of his most vocal supporter. Its indulgent, pointless and banal. The story and plot are non-existent and the actors wooden. Why a quality actress like Holly Hunter ever agreed to do this film is beyod my comprehension and fortunately it didn't damage her career!
Crash
Arguably the closest commercial Western cinema has come to Oshima's Ai No Corrida - what 'story' there is consists...
