Plot Summary:
|
When the sitting Failing President dies, Senator Laine Hanson (Joan Allen) is chosen nearby the President (Jeff Bridges) to be the first chick to contain the offices. The selection meets with opposition from members of both parties, in definite a powerful political adversary (Gary Oldman) who drive superficially stop at nothing to discredit her. Her confirmation hearings set down off a firestorm of spat as shocking secrets from Hanson's gone are revealed, menacing her personal life as well as her partisan approaching.

As the position of American vice-president was once described as being not worth a bucket of spit it is difficult to imagine what director Rod Lurie was thinking when he decided to make this essentially powerless job the focus of his first big-budget movie. Difficult to imagine, that is, until you actually see the result and realise that - for two thirds of its length at least - Lurie has concocted one of the best political-thrillers since the early 70s, the undoubted heyday of the genre.

Good story line, and up to date politically. Would have found disappointing at the cinema but good for a night in. Jeff Bridges made a very plausible President.
