Confessions of a Shopaholic
Todd McCarthyA very gifted comedienne and a bulging shopping bag of inane antics and material-girl excess wrestle to a draw in Confessions of a Shopaholic. The third high-profile chick flick, after Bride Wars and He's Just Not That Into You, to be released within the first six weeks of the new year, this adaptation of the first two of Sophie Kinsella's massively popular novels strains far too hard for comedy that seldom erupts with full force and inevitably betrays a free-spending mindset that now feels gone with the wind. Confessions of a Shopaholic
Claudia PuigConfessions of a Shopaholic is like a sale item that catches your eye simply because of its garish color, atrocious style and startling uselessness. Not only is it an unfunny movie shrilly told, it probably is the most ill-timed and appallingly insulting movie in recent memory. How could any studio be so out of touch as to release a movie glorifying the compulsive shopping habits of an air-headed spendthrift during this dismal state in the global economy? Besides its insensitivity, it bombards us, like a too-cluttered closet, with a clueless heroine, laugh-repellant slapstick shtick and an unconvincing by-the-numbers romance. Where The Devil Wears Prada, with its flurry of couture, might have filled fashionistas with longing, Shopa...
For me great, for my husband, well he confess he'd have rather shopped around for a different film..
For me this was a lovely bit of fluff, a nonesense light rom-com that didnt try to be anything else,, and I thoroughly enjoyed it... but a warning if you want to watch this with your other half.... my husband described it as a fields of corn and dairy full of cheese movie that was a very poor Devil Wears Prada copy. And in a way I have to agree, this time our magazine employee is a shopaholic, but has very similar Devils Wears qualities. Definately a movie for the girls to enjoy and the boys to totally avoid... Much like shopping in real life really !
