Plot Summary:
|
When a broken hearted schoolboy loses the treasured wooden nativity unvarying that links him to his precise father, his disquieted old woman persuades a lonely ill-tempered woodcarver to sire a replacement, and to allow her son to watch him toil on it. The commission takes their relationship to unexpected places as the young patient makes greater and more difficult demands of the woodcarver's genius, and as Christmas approaches, the three struggle to surface to terms with each other, their painful memories and the process of putting their unhappiness behind them.

Sentimental Christmastide film
This is a watch with the family sentimental Christmas film based at the time of WW1.
The scenes are well set and the lighting very atmospheric with fine acting from the kids but it somehow lacks the impact you get with A Wonderful Life.
It is a gently done heartwarming story and unabashed tearjerker so keep a box of tissues handy for the family.
Joely Richardson very good as the stiff upper lip mother and Luke Ward-Wilkinson excellent as the son.
Well worth watching but only rates good in my estimate.
