Charlotte's Web
E.B. White's classic children's tale about "some pig" gets a live action makeover. Dakota Fanning stars
Since its publication in 1952, E.B. White's novel about a spring pig who befriends a spider has become a children's classic. First adapted for the screen in 1973 as an animated Hanna-Barbera musical, it's now received what's likely to be its definitive treatment with this perfect blend of live action and computer generated animal-ation. Touching, joyous and life-affirming in the least vomitous way imaginable, it deserves to become a classic in its own right, a soulful companion piece to Babe.
Dakota Fanning stars as Fern, a farm girl from Maine who saves runty piglet Wilbur (voiced by ten-year-old Dominic Scott Kay) from her daddy's axe. It's a stay of exec...
Charlotte's Web
Kevin CrustThe new live-action rendering of E.B. White's perennial children's favorite, Charlotte's Web, is so carefully spun that it's lifeless. Which is ironic because, since it was first published in 1952, the book the movie is based on has been a gentle introduction for children to the harsh realities of the cycle of life.
Adapted by Oscar nominee Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) and Over the Hedge writer-director Karey Kirkpatrick, the film is faithful to its source material and mercifully makes no attempt to update it with contemporary slang. The familiar tale of a runt pig named Wilbur who is saved from slaughter by a young girl named Fern (played by Dakota Fanning) and befriended by a spider with an appreciation for language is much the same as you would reme...
Charlotte's Web
Claudia PuigCharlotte's Web is a whimsical and warmly appealing adaptation of the children's classic. It is likely to win over new readers and still please its multi-generational legions of fans. With a widely diverse voice cast, it manages to fuse actors, live animals and computer-generated creatures (with everyone talking) in a way that brings to mind another charming film about a pig, 1995's Babe. In fact, the endearing voice of Wilbur the pig is surprisingly similar to that of Babe, even though it is courtesy of 10-year-old Dominic Scott Kay (and not a thirtysomething veteran voice actress, Babe's Christine Cavanaugh). The story centers on Wilbur, the beloved runt pig of 12-year-old Fern (Dakota Fanning). She saves the piglet from destructio...
