Charlie Wilson's War
Kenneth TuranCharlieWilson's War is an anachronism, the wrong movie at the wrong time. Not only does it tell its tale in a style that feels dated and artificial, the story itself focuses on events that history has overtaken. The moving finger has written and moved on, and not even the combined star power of Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, writer Aaron Sorkin and director Mike Nichols can do anything about it.
Based on the bestselling book by George Crile, Charlie Wilson's War does tell a most unusual 1980s true story. It relates how Wilson, a pleasure-loving congressman from Texas (Hanks), joined forces with a wealthy and reactionary socialite (Roberts) and a grumpy CIA operative (Philip Seymour Hoffman) to use billions of dollars in U.S. and Saudi aid to arm Afghan ...
Charlie Wilson's War
In this historical comedy, three unlikely partners-in-politics bring about the end of the Soviet Union - with repercussions that will ultimately damage their own country. Mike Nichols directs, from a screenplay by Aaron ('The West Wing') Sorkin
Larger-than-life characters, memorably funny lines, and a story totally unbelievable and yet almost entirely true - that is Charlie Wilson's War, Mike Nichols' dramatisation of the three unlikely figures who together helped spearhead a massive (but covert) US operation in 1980s Afghanistan, leading to the ignominious withdrawal of Russian troops, and then to the collapse of the Soviet Union... and eventually to the mess of today's Afghanistan.
When we first meet Charlie Wilson (Hanks), a Texan Democrat Congre...
A disaster.
It is quite difficult to say what this film hopes to achieve. Is it to entertain? To inform? To criticise American policy, or endorse it? It is not hard to maintain, however, that whatever the aims were in the thoughts of director Mike Nichols, Charlie Wilson's War is a resounding failure.
The film - like Nichols' previous feature, Closer - lacks any meaningful character development. Before the release of the film, Tom Hanks told his prospective audience not to see his character as a morally upright man. No, he said, Wilson is supposed to an ignorant womaniser and drug abuser: a man (as he is told by the President of Pakistan) with 'substantial character flaws'. One wonders how an audience can possibly hope to reach such a conclusion when they are handed the t...
Charlie Wilson's War
Larger-than-life characters, memorably remarkable lines, and a recital totally unbelievable and yet almost entirely unadulterated - that is Charlie Wilson's In conflict, Mike Nichols' dramatisation of the three unlikely figures who together helped vanguard a massive (but covert) US operation in 1980s Afghanistan, supreme to the ignominious withdrawal of Russian troops, and then to the fall apart of the Soviet Compatibility... and eventually to the mess of today's Afghanistan. When we first meet Charlie Wilson (Hanks), a Texan Democrat Congressman with a lengthy line of credit in civil favours and a love of white mule and women, he is in Las Vegas, sharing a hot tub (and cocaine) with a shonky Canada entrepreneur, a 'Debauchee' playmate and two strippers. Yet t...
