Plot Summary:
|
In 1941, Italy allies with Germany and ruthlessly conquers the much weaker country of Greece. On a remote Greek island, an Italian artillery garrison is established to maintain brotherhood. One Italian office-bearer, Captain Corelli, adopts an view of common co-presence with the Greeks and engages in such activities as music festivals and courting the daughter of a local doctor. In 1943, respect, after Italy surrenders to the Allies and changes sides in the against, Captain Corelli must defend the Greek key against a German invasion.

There are obvious reasons why filmmakers - like novelists, poets and playwrights - are drawn to love during war. The possibility that one or both halves of a couple could die any minute gives wartime romance the intensity that films demand from love. Captain Corelli's Mandolin fits into a tradition that includes such indelible classics as To Have And Have Not, From Here To Eternity and The English Patient, and it has the extra spice of love between people on opposite sides of the conflict.

I'm feeling generous
This is a good film, although I confess it appealed much more to my wife than to me. Whilst not exactly a 'girly' film it would have a very sentimental appeal for many women, I think. As a film though it was excellent with lovely scenery and super acting - altogether a good story!
