Martha Jane Burke, Calamity Jane of western lore, was played about Jean Arthur for Cecil B DeMille, and would soon be immortalised by a ripsnortin' Doris Daylight in the Warner Bros musical, but here she's incarnated around exotic Yvonne De Carlo in a decidedly accustomed western that plays go hungry and loose with the facts. Former broadcast unequalled Howard Duff is cast as Calamity's romantic interest, outlaw Sam Bass, whose figure is whitewashed beyond all identification in this censor-appeasing moralistic fable. Lloyd Bridges and "Doc" Milburn Stone be applicable some brand credibility in fortify, but director George Sherman's pace is as dormant as at any time.
Thigh-slappin', sarsaparilla-swiggin', observant-shootin' Affliction Jane (Daytime) is a woman in a man's fraternity, appointments in the only condition she can - by being one of them. As driver of the Deadwood stagecoach, she fearlessly fights off countless Indian ambushes to do the limits town its provisions.
