Director Terry Gilliam, who brought his magical storytelling talents to such films as Time Bandits and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, sets his sights on the Brothers Grimm, turning their moving spirit into a playfully grim fairy tale all its own. Devise in at 18th Century French-occupied Germany, The Brothers Grimm stars Matt Damon as Grimm and Heath Ledger as Jake Grimm, siblings who travelling the countryside as snake-oil salesmen, convincing unsuspecting towns that they are haunted and agreeing to cause rid of the demons for a price. In the meantime, they set their tales down in col... umn, creating a wealth of oddball, offbeat, and daunting characters. But after they are caught nigh Loose Delatombe (Jonathan Pryce) and his sidekick, Cavaldi (Peter Stormare), they are sent to the wee village of Marbaden to make plain the mysterious disappearance of a number of puerile girls, placing them in the middle of a pretence world contrastive with any they'd in any case invented. They secure the help of a mouzhik woman, Angelika (Lena Headey), and they set off seeing that the evil forest to release the lives of the girls and themselves.

Brothers Grimm, The
Matt Damon and Heath Ledger star as fairytale writing brothers who are ordered by the Napoleonic French to solve a mystery in the forests of Germany. Fantasy yarn from Terry Gilliam
The Brothers Grimm isn't Terry Gilliam's smartest film, or his most personal, or the one where his imagination has the freest reign (it was executive produced by the Weinstein brothers). But it is a solidly entertaining movie, aided by actors who seem to relish their roles in the ex-Python's muddy, fantastical vision of Napoleonic Europe.
A prologue in 1796 introduces us to the Grimms. They're poverty stricken and starving, so when young Jacob sells the family's final asset, their cow, for some "magic beans", his brother Will is irate. Cut to 15 years later and the now adult Jaco...
Brothers Grimm, The
Mike ClarkLate-August release. Color photography that's supposed to evoke fairy-tale mysticism that looks closer to muddy brown. Matt Damon in late-18th-century costuming. If there were a movie genre called "the non-starter," it sounds as if The Brothers Grimm could be a leader of the pack.
But the director is Terry Gilliam, who on paper seems the perfect person to portray Grimm grotesqueries. And as it turns out, the best thing to be said about this expensive but drab wannabe mirthmaker is that it has some of its director's quirky touches. This, at least, sustains goodwill here and there amid storytelling that frequently sputters.
The movie portrays Grimms Wilhelm (Damon) and Jacob (Heath Ledger) as traveling con men who are milking what they can in backwoo...
