The Warlords has eight credited screenwriters. That's never a good sign, and the film's narrative feels as if it were cobbled together from the minutes of several committee meetings. That's not to say The Warlords isn't an impressive epic that will transport Westerners into the heart of a war many of us haven't even heard of. The fact that producer-director Peter Chan has three of East Asia's most notable leading men - Jet Li, Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro - as his stars also elevates the production. They're always watchable, even if you lose track of what's going on.
