Plot Summary:
|
When Arvilla Holden promises her husband that she'll cremate him and spread his ashes, she doesn't expect her solemn word of honour to be called so soon. Neither does she expect a on a trip-stakes fight with her appropriate to-daughter Francine, a Santa Barbara socialite steady to give him a solely burial. Convinced that she has no choice but to surrender the ashes to Francine, Arvilla sets off on a trek from Pocatello, Idaho, to Santa Barbara. Her friends, life-of-the-party Margene and goody-two-shoes Carol, volunteer to collapse with her to go to moral support. Pleasant girlie film
Although this was centred around a group of older women and there were no shootings or cop car high-speed chases, this kind of reminded me in places of Thelma and Louise - it was certainly a life-changing road-trip.
I was actually pleasantly surprised by this film having read the other reviews- it was very funny, very romantic and sometimes made me cry. I really enjoyed it.
Kathy Bates gave a stellar performance and it was nice to see Tom Skerritt again.
Bonneville
A gentle, episodic amble through several relationships, boasting a big-name cast and a more jaundiced outlook than your average British romantic comedy
Despite its provocative title and the fact that it's set entirely around Hampstead Heath, don't imagine this will be a writhing circus of steamy loins. Okay, so Ewan McGregor does hang around in his Speedos, winking at muscular chaps he's taken a shine to, but this is balanced out by Dame Eileen Atkins reminiscing on a park bench with an old gent in a Panama hat.
It's easy to see how Aschlin Ditta's script attracted so much name talent to this low-budget project, with the entire cast given the opportunity to take turns at centre-stage rather than hanging about in the shadow of, let's say, Hugh Grant.
