Believer, The
Screenwriter Henry Bean makes his directorial debut with this hard-hitting drama based on the true life story of a Jewish Nazi. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2001
Henry Bean is living proof that Hollywood movies don't have to be dumbed-down, mass-marketed popcorn fodder. His screenplays for the likes of Internal Affairs and Deep Cover were shot through with intricate plots and ambiguous, contradictory characters.
Bean's directorial debut The Believer is not a smart, complex Hollywood thriller. Instead it's a smart, complex low-budget character study, shot on digital video with a powerhouse central performance from Ryan Gosling as a Jewish Nazi struggling to reconcile his contradictory beliefs.
Based on a true story...
Believe...it could happen.
A non-mainstream film that deserves all the credit it is due. Based in part on a true life event, a young man is torn between hiding his Jewish upbringing and belonging to a Nazi-like extremist group. A tough emotional movie that will have you on the edge of your seat and leave you thinking about it for days afterwards. To say more than that will give too much away. The film can speak for itself and speak volumes it does.
Believer, The
Danny Balint (Gosling) is a skinhead. He'll cross the alley to roar vilify in the face of a Jew, strike him and kick him...
Believer, The
"...The veil provides horrific rushes generated in equal part not later than Bean's genuinely intellectually challenging screenplay and an exceptional performance by Ryan Gosling..."
