Around the World in 80 Days
Around the World in 80 Days sails along on a slipstream of pleasant scenery, amusing incident and the boundless charms of its appealing leading men, Jackie Chan and Steve Coogan: It's an unexpectedly buoyant spectacular. Based on the Jules Verne novel, the basis of a 2-ton turkey from 1956 with David Niven, this light entertainment suggests that the class of movie known as "the family film" -- think Fred MacMurray and a talking dog -- has yet to be vanquished by product placements, vulgarity and unnecessary violence. It may never be hip to be square, but as this genial film attests sometimes it's sweet relief.
The story, originally published by Verne in 1872, concerns an English stuffed shirt of unknown circumstances, Phileas Fogg (Coogan), who bets some fellow club ...
Not a literary adaptation but nevertheless good fun
This firm is only loosely based on the book by Jules Verne with the same title. Apart from a healthy dose of humour it adds another martial arts storyline that rather distracts from the main theme. Watch out for a number of interesting cameo appearances, though, particularly Richard Branson commenting on a balloon trip around the world.
Although I was a little disappointed first that the book had not been taken seriously a very much enjoyed the humour and the good-natured family fun of this film. Some of the visuals are very nice indeed and both the acting and the camera work of high standards.
So forget the book, switch off your brains, get the family together and have a nice two hours of good fun.
Around the World in 80 Days
Jules Verne's classic tale of Victorian adventure is given an oriental spin in this adaptation. Jackie Chan is the runaway thief helping Steve Coogan's Phileas Fogg win a bet by circumnavigating the globe
Sharing the title, basic plot and very little else with Jules Verne's original novel, this 2004 cinematic take on Around The World In 80 Days is closer (at least in structure) to Michael Anderson's Oscar-winning 1956 film version, with episodic adventures punctuated by a variety of star cameos.
Sadly, while Anderson's film featured iconic faces like Buster Keaton and Frank Sinatra, the best examples this tired action-comedy can muster are Owen and Luke Wilson, Richard Branson, and an embarrassing turn from Arnold Schwarzenegger, sporting a shocking ...
