This is renowned for being the first film in which Garbo was heard speaking (cue the sensationalist tagline 'Garbo Talks!'), and the novelty of hearing the elusive screen goddess graduate from silents is as good a reason as any to see this wordy but worth-it adaptation of Eugene O'Neil's play. Garbo is fine as Anna, a girl whose problematic past (she was abandoned by her father while still a child) comes back to haunt her when, as an adult, she goes to stay with her long estranged dad and falls for a local sailor. Shades of melodrama throughout, but Garbo is as watchable as ever.
