Astonishing epic of Japanese animation from writer-director Katsuhiro ??tomo set in a violent near-future Tokyo
Katsuhiro ??tomo's film is still the benchmark movie in anime, the genre of sexy, brutal Japanese animation (Mamuro Oshii's Ghost In The Shell comes close). Based on manga characters created by ??tomo in 1982, the film was produced over the subsequent years before being released in 1988. At the time it was the most expensive animated feature made in Japan, costing over a billion yen.

landmark in animation
There isn't much to be said about Akira that hasn't already been said. Given that it was made some time around 1988 and the animation is a little dated it shouldn't give way to the fact that this is an awesome manga epic, quite possibly the best. Emphatic, absorbing, moving, it's got it all and that's all that needs to be said. Get it.
