Plot Summary:
|
Small fry meets popsy. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn't. This post modern like testimony is not in the least what we expect it to be--it's thorny all delightful, funny and sad, a twisted cruise of highs and lows that doesn't surely frequent where we value it will. When Tom, a hapless hello card copywriter and incompetent impassioned, is blindsided after his girlfriend Summer dumps him, he shifts repudiate and forth middle of various periods of their 500 days "together" to try to figure out where things went wrong. His reflections ultimately principal him to completely rediscover his dutiful pas... sions in life.

First-time director Marc Webb deals competently with a script that tries to invent the romantic comedy wheel
The disappointing things about (500) Days of Summer begin with the title, which turns out not to be referring to some weird temporal stasis or extreme climate change but simply the name of the adorably kooky-cute female lead, Summer Finn (a role Zooey Deschanel could do in her sleep).
The more important letdown comes five minutes in, when a mock-pompous voiceover informs us that this is not going to be a love story. What is it, then? It looks like a romantic comedy, sounds, tastes, feels like one, but we're going to be denied the romance.
