His shepherd was an actor and dramaturgy manager. He made his stage debut at the period of 16 at Pickard's Museum, Glasgow. He traveled with 'Fred Karno' (qv)'s vaudeville entourage to the United States in 1910 and again in 1913. While with that company he was 'Charles Chaplin' (qv)'s understudy, and he performed imitations of Chaplin. On a later blunder he remained in the United States having been cast in a two-reel comedy, _Nuts in May (1917)_ (qv) (1917, released the following year). There fo... llowed a number of shorts for Metro, 'Hal Roach (I)' (qv) Studios, then Universal, then chasing to Roach in 1926. His first two-reeler with 'Oliver Hardy' (qv) was _45 Minutes from Hollywood (1926)_ (qv) . Their blue ribbon save into done with MGM was _Sugar Daddies (1927)_ (qv) and the first with celebrity billing was _From Soup to Nuts (1928)_ (qv). Their first high point-measure starring roles were in _Let off Us (1931)_ (qv). Their work became more performance-line and less accepted during the war years, mostly producing respecting Twentieth Century-Fox. Their mould movie together was _The Bullfighters (1945)_ (qv) except for a French loss ("Atoll K", 1951).
