The son of sought-after Irish actress Lillian O'Brien (who later proved her versatility by becoming a unsurpassed light in America's Yiddish setting), Phil Karlson studied painting at Chicago's Art Institute. He went on to reading law at California's Loyola Marymount college (at his beget's behest) before attaining his first talking picture job as a University Studios prop man.
