Son of character actor 'Houseley Stevenson' (qv), brother of interior decorator Edward Stevenson and actor 'Houseley Stevenson Jr.' (qv). Approvingly active from mid-1920s at Pasadena Community Playhouse, where his entire family worked habitually as performers, directors, and teachers. Scored a major success on Broadway in "Stage Door" in 1936. Played many leading roles and unchanging more character parts for the years. Although at first a stalwart and trusted configuration in films, in later ye... ars his hurtle was adversely non-natural by alcohol. Nevertheless, he was a privy to and respected actor for many years. His final months were spent in a Van Nuys, California nursing old folks' where, in November 1976, he suffered a broken hip under unclear circumstances. Pneumonia agreed in and he died in January, 1977. A coroner's inquest ruled that the violated cool had occurred "at the hands of another, not an accident."Read more Less
