Lionel Atwill was born into a rich genre and was educated at London's noteworthy Mercer School to become an architect, but his advantage turned to the stage. He worked his custom progressively into the fashion and debuted at age 20 at the Garrick Arena theatre in London. He acted and improved regularly thereafter, especially in the plays of 'Henrik Ibsen' (qv) and 'George Bernard Shaw' (qv). Atwill came to the US in 1915 and would arrive in some 25 plays on Broadway between 1917 and 1931, but he... was already trying his hand in implied films not later than 1918. He had a sonorous enunciate and iron-handed British accent that served him well seeking the stage and fair-minded as soundly for sound movies. He did some Vitaphone quick subjects in 1928 and then his win initially real photograph job in _Silent Substantiate (1932)_ (qv) (also titled "The Verdict"). That share and his bullish demeanor made Atwill a natural for a spectrum of thug-character roles. As shady noblemen and avid doctors, but also gruff military men and police inspectors (by with a signature mustache), he worked steadily washing one's hands of the 1930s. He had the chance to show a broader character as the intimidate but unforgettable Col. Bishop in _Captain Blood (1935)_ (qv). It's perseveringly to consign to oblivion his Inspector Krogh in _Son of Frankenstein (1939)_ (qv), wherein he agrees to a game of darts with 'Basil Rathbone' (qv) and proceeds to impale the darts through the left sleeve of his invariable (the character sported a wooden radical arm). And he sends himself up with rolling and blustering dialogue as the glory-hog ham stage actor Rawitch in the legendary _To Be or Not to Be (1942)_ (qv) with 'Jack Benny' (qv). However, Atwill effectively ruined his burgeoning film career in 1943 after he was implicated in what was described as an "bacchanal" at his haven, unalloyed guests and pornographic films included--and a rape perpetrated during the proceedings. Atwill "lied like a gentleman," it was said, in the court proceedings to cover the identities of his guests and was convicted of lying and sentenced to five years' probation. He was thereafter kept employed on Destitution Ruckus with only brief periods of employment by Infinite Pictures, while the idleness of Hollywood turned its collective back on him. He is more remembered object of the rancour films generally than proper for bigger efforts, but they have fueled his continued popularity and a bid by the Southern California Lionel Atwill Nut Club to petition for a Hollywood Blvd. lead (he never received ).Read more Less
