Discovered on Broadway by director 'Howard Hawks' (qv), La Rue was originally brought to Hollywood to play a gangster in _Scarface (1932)_ (qv). He lost that role to 'George Raft' (qv), and similarly was replaced by 'Humphrey Bogart' (qv) in the film version of _The Petrified Forest (1936)_ (qv). Eventually he became well-known to movie-goers as a mean, sexy gangster type in sadistic roles like _Miriam Hopkins_' abductor in _The Story of Temple Drake (1933)_ (qv).
