Handsome and elegant George Peppard occasionally displayed considerable talent through his career, but was too often cast in undemanding action roles. Following Broadway and television experience, he made a strong film debut in _The Strange One (1957)_ (qv). He started getting noticed when he played 'Robert Mitchum' (qv)'s illegitimate son in the popular melodrama _Home from the Hill (1960)_ (qv). He then established himself as a leading man, giving arguably his most memorable film performance a... s 'Audrey Hepburn' (qv)'s love interest in _Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)_ (qv). Seen by the studios as a promising young star, Peppard was subsequently cast in some of the major blockbusters of the early/mid-'60s: _How the West Was Won (1962)_ (qv), _The Victors (1963)_ (qv), _The Carpetbaggers (1964)_ (qv) and _Operation Crossbow (1965)_ (qv). He reached the peak of his popularity in another such lavish production, _The Blue Max (1966)_ (qv), in which he effectively played an obsessively competitive German flying officer during WWI. By the late 1960s, however, he seemed to settle as a tough lead in more average, often hokum, adventures, including _House of Cards (1968)_ (qv), _Cannon for Cordoba (1970)_ (qv) and _The Groundstar Conspiracy (1972)_ (qv). In the early 1970s his declining popularity was temporarily boosted thanks to the TV series _"Banacek" (1972)_ (qv). With his film roles becoming increasingly uninteresting, he acted in, directed and produced the drama _Five Days from Home (1979)_ (qv), but the result was rather disappointing. In the mid-'80s he again obtained success on television as the leader of _"The A-Team" (1983)_ (qv).Read more Less
