Raised in Los Alamitos, California
Attended Ripon College from 1962 to 1966 and majored in philosophy, but also appeared in dramas there, including the title role of Antigone and Rosalind in "As You Like It." She received the Ripon College Distinguished Alumni Award in 1984 and an Honorary Doctorate of Performing Arts in 1988.
Graduated from Central School of Speech and Drama in London in 1969.
A stage actress by nature, she first appeared on Broadway in Woody Allen's "Play It Again, Sam."
